Red Shack
'Red Shack'.......oil on canvas panel.......7x9 inches
Visited the Sunset Ranch stables with my sister Sophie one sunny morning and painted this little, antiquated red shack perched on a gently slopping hill overlooking horse corrals and an incredible view of Los Angeles. The ranch, nestled within a little canyon at the top of Beachwood drive, offers sunset horse rides through Griffith Park and has been extensively used for shoot locations for films and photography (including a scene from David Lynch’s, ‘Mullholland Drive’). A large, weathered 1920’s style barn that still retains it’s charm and character accommodates rental and privately owned horses.
Free roaming peacocks, chickens and a friendly golden retriever casually meandered throughout the grounds. An exotic looking spotted rooster sporting a cockscomb that resembled a punked-out hair piece made random and unsettling crowing sounds (like that of a cat being tortured) that repeatedly disturbed my calm as I painted within this serene equestrian oasis. Sunset Ranch is infused with a sense of nostalgia and a timeless quality of the old west. Painting amid it’s charming relics and natural beauty was extremely enjoyable and invigorating.
Yippe-ki-yay, mother f**ker!

another glowing beauty!!
great contrasts, ocre against purple, red against green.
love the loose suggested details
Ms. Jennifer . . .You have left an indelible impression on me! Every single painting you put in this blog is imprinted in my eyelids! No kidding. The atmosphere you achieve with such looseness and the feel of SoCal is really special. Keep it up, Girl!
Mike
(PS Thanks for stopping in on my blog)
Hi Jennifer.. this picture reminds me of the heat that's yet to visit us this Summer. Beautifully done as usual... nice when paintings are usually excellent.. instead of hit and miss. But this speaks of years of doing the drill day after day adding skills... and the ability to create captivating scenes. Hope I get to join you soon on the PA trail.
Nice story with so much atmosphere just like your painting. It is interesting that you had composed the shack to the side with that diagonal leading down from it. Very good and surprising solution. Like Rob said the suggested details are wonderful.
Really interesting shapes in the trees and shrubs with their cool shadows. Very nicely composed Jen.
I love your work. You really get the different shapes in the landscape and keep them loosely brushed in. Great choices in colors. Fabulous neutrals setting off the red. Masterful!
Yay! Jennifer's got a new painting online! A great one--well, each one is great and I really look forward to seeing them every time.
What a great study of warm and cool complimentary colors!
The cool purple/blue shadows setting off the warm sunshine hitting the ground and the splash of red against the compliment greens.
Nicely ballanced and freshly painted! All of this on a 7x9 canvas panel creating a beautiful impression of the moment.
Can't wait for the next one.
Cheers... Andrew
Hi Jennifer, it's always a pleasure for me to see your paintings! Above all your color order teaches me a lot - thank you! Michael
Jennifer.. lovely work on the red building and the effect of sunlight on the sandy hill thingy is outstanding... love the bold blues in the shadows there.
Mike
