In order to banish the holiday blues and infuse a little warmth into my cold, wintery days, I painted a beach scene using a small color sketch and photo reference. It was overcast that morning and the clouds began to evaporate at around noon which caused the background mountains to appear veiled and mysterious. I wanted to create a sense of vast space and isolation by using the deserted life guard staion as a focal point.
Happy feet......
although they look a little puckered from wading in the freezing water too long!

Love the little birds and the little feet. ;-) Nice big sense of empty quiet. The under painting does convey a promise of warmth in the future. Enter this one in a contest. It's a winner.

What underpaintings can do, it's just awesome.
I like the pink underpainting coming through!! There is nothing more difficult than paintig a simple scene and you've done a great job of it.

I agree Rene, underpaintings can add a little extra spark and color vibration in a painting (and I find it unifies a painting as a whole)

The quiet simplicity of the deserted beach is what appealed to me. The challenging aspect of the painting process was to suggest more with less.
